Energy storage plays a key role in enabling the world communities to develop a low-carbon electricity system. A proper storage system can provide more flexibility and balance to the grid, providing a back-up to intermittent renewable energy. Locally, it can improve management of distribution networks, reducing costs and improving efficiency. In this way, it can simplify introduction of renewable energy sources to the market, accelerate decarbonisation of the electricity grid, improve security and efficiency of electricity transmission and distribution, stabilize market prices for electricity, simultaneously ensuring higher security of energy supply. Energy storage needs to be integrated in network-based energy systems, in the electrical grid system, heat and cooling network and gas networks. It can also significantly contribute to the development and emergence of Smart Grid concept at all voltage levels.
